Created momentary panic in the villageArriving with its herd from a nearby forest, the baby made the misstep in Giridih district, in the eastern state of Jharkhand, earlier this month.

After the townspeople of Nimatand chased off the herd, the calf was discovered the following morning at the bottom of the well.

This is the heart-warming moment a baby elephant was rescued from a 30ft-deep well by a group of people in India.

The one-year-old calf later chased its rescuers in a frightened state to cause momentary panic among the people of Ramakuppan village in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

Villagers alerted the local forest department, which launched a rescue operation using three backhoes. Officials demolished an entire side of the well wall, eventually cutting a ramp into the earth to allow the calf to walk out on its own instead of being lifted vertically.

According to reports, the panicked calf was heard calling for its mother by locals who raised the alarm.

The herd had to be diverted by Forest department officials prior to the rescue operation being carried out.

The footage shows the elephant calf circling the bottom of the well in a distressed manner and pawing at the walls.

Suddenly the frightened elephant begins to chase the local residents and creates slight panic in the village.

The elephant was reported to have sustained no injuries and was later reunited with its herd.
