From Desolation to Determination: The Tale of a Newborn Puppy’s Struggle Against Rejection, Dehydration, and Malnutrition Illuminates a Beacon of Hope in the Fight for Survival

This handsome little guy just turned up at Barrow County Animal Control. From what we understand he is the runt of the litter, has an open fontanelle and is being rejected by his mom. This poor little dude is severely dehydrated, exceedingly malnourished, very pale (almost purple), and we understand that he had a seizure (possibly 2) during transport on the way to us.

We’ve given him SubQ fluids, a nice warm bottle and some nutritional supplements. He is now resting comfortably in his heated mini suite and this afternoon he will get a spa treatment and pawdicure. He’s in pretty rough shape and could really use your positive thoughts and prayers. Day 1: This ridiculously adorable little love nugget is in grave condition.

He hasn’t kept any of his formula down, has had several seizures since arriving and is having difficulty breathing. He has taken up residence in one of our oxygen chambers. Please send the love! Stewie had a very rough night but he is still hanging in there. He’s finally able to keep some formula down, but very little at a time, so he is on an every 2 hour feeding schedule so we can keep him hydrated and full of the nutrition that he needs.

Stewie is still in grave condition, we are doing all we can for him. He will continue to be cared for and monitored every hour! TIA for your patience, the puppies need to be the number one priority. Day 3: Stewie is still not doing well nor has he shown any signs of improvement, in fact he has grown weaker.

Since he arrived, he’s been having seizures, vomiting, is anemic and lethargic. This morning he has finally produced what is possibly the baseline cause of all of his ailments…fully developed roundworms. The dewormer is working and he is shedding the parasites. If you are unfamiliar… ALL puppies are born with worms, they get them from their mother.

It’s comforting to actually know what we are dealing with, however, he is still not out of the woods. He is receiving nutritional supplements, his formula (which we are tubefeeding) is made up of puppy milk replacer, liver water and Emeraid intensive care powder, he is receiving fluids around the clock and residing in an incubator, where he is also receiving oxygen… He is still in grave condition.

Please keep sending all the love! Day 4: Stewie is such a little warrior, he is still fighting and fighting hard! This poor little dumpling has been vomiting live worms, the parasite burden is unimaginable for such a tiny little creature! He is receiving around the clock care, which includes nutritional supplements, small meals every 2 hours… Day 6: Stewie Watch! Heartbreaking! Stewie is still expressing worms…from both ends… Still feeling like poop… Still having difficulty keeping his meals down… still in grave condition.

Still having difficulty keeping his meals down… still in grave condition. We have lessened his meals to only 5 mL of Pedialyte mixed with liver water and nutritional supplements. This seems to be working and helping him keep things down, he will require feedings every hour in hour to insure he’s getting enough.

He is still getting subQ fluids, residing in an incubator, where he is also receiving oxygen. Day 7: We are going to celebrate every victory for this little boy no matter how small! Just moments ago Stewie nursed on his own 10 mL!!

Day 8: Stewie hasn’t been feeling quite as energetic as he was yesterday, we are back to tubefeeding. He’s also having trouble regulating his temperature today, it’s been a little roller coaster but he is currently maintaining a temperature of 100.5, this is good. He is still getting subQ fluids, getting small bland but nutrient-rich meals every two hours, residing in an incubator, where he is also receiving oxygen.

Day 9: At Stewie’s 8 PM feeding last night he stopped breathing. After almost a minute of CPR he started breathing again. I disconnected the oxygen from the incubator and ran the line directly inside and held it next to his mouth and cranked it up. I watched him for almost an hour and his breathing was a little more steady although still labored.

He received fluids and was closely monitored throughout the night. At his 5 AM feeding, he stopped breathing again. I was not able to save him!! Rest in peace sweet Stewie, you are loved beyond measure!
