After 35 Years, Loneliest Elephant Finds Sanctuary and Companionship in the World

In a tale spanning over three decades, Kaavan the elephant has endured solitude since the passing of his only companion, Saheli, in 2012. Confined to a cramped enclosure at Islamabad Zoo, Kaavan’s plight has garnered international attention, culminating in a petition advocating for his relocation to a more compassionate environment.

Now, after years of advocacy and tireless efforts, Kaavan is poised to bid farewell to Islamabad Zoo and embark on a new journey to a wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia. Dr. Amir Khalil, the head of Four Paws, expressed optimism about the move’s success, highlighting the promising conditions for Kaavan’s rehabilitation and integration into a new family group.

Kaavan’s current living conditions in Islamabad Zoo have been a cause for concern, with a small enclosure offering minimal shelter from the scorching sun and soaring temperatures reaching up to a blistering 40°C (104°F). These harsh conditions have exacerbated Kaavan’s distress, leading to troubling behaviors such as repetitive episodes and head bobbing, indicative of mental anguish.

However, with his relocation imminent, Kaavan is poised for a transformative journey towards freedom and well-being. Esteemed elephant experts will be on hand to assist him in overcoming mental health challenges and facilitating his socialization with other elephants in the sanctuary.

In his new habitat, Kaavan will have the opportunity to roam freely in a lush forest spanning over one million acres, providing ample space for exploration and the establishment of numerous new friendships. As Kaavan prepares for his journey, our heartfelt wishes accompany him for a safe transition, a swift recovery, and a bright future filled with joy and companionship.
