Explore Kandovan: An ancient village of at least 800 years carved into the mountain (Video)

Nestled in the province of East Azarbaijan, Iran, lies the extraordinary village of Kandovan, a hidden gem near the city of Tabriz. With a history spanning at least 800 years, this remarkable village is home to 670 people and boasts breathtaking scenery that captivates travelers from around the world.

What sets Kandovan apart is its unique architecture, where homes are not built on a mountain but within it. Carved inside rocks, some of these dwellings are over 700 years old, showcasing the ingenuity of its inhabitants throughout the centuries. Legend has it that Kandovan was partially formed by volcanic remnants from Mount Sahand’s eruptions centuries ago, adding to its mystique and charm.

The rock itself serves as an energy-efficient material, naturally regulating temperatures within the homes. During the scorching summer months, the rock keeps the interiors cool, while in winter, it retains warmth, eliminating the need for heaters or air conditioning systems for most residents.

The village’s intriguing architecture defies conventional norms, with its incredible slopes and winding paths leaving travelers in awe of its beauty. Recently, a hotel was constructed in Kandovan, aptly named the “Rocky Hotel,” inspired by and intricately connected to the village’s unique style. Featuring stunning cave interiors and comfortable living spaces, the hotel offers guests an immersive experience amidst the ancient rock dwellings.

One fascinating aspect of the Rocky Hotel is the process of room construction, which takes ten months for four people to dig out. The result is a testament to human craftsmanship and the enduring allure of Kandovan’s architecture.

As travelers explore the winding paths and marvel at the rock-carved homes of Kandovan, they are transported to a world where history meets modern comfort, where nature’s beauty intertwines with human ingenuity. It’s a journey worth taking, a glimpse into a timeless village etched within mountains, waiting to be discovered and admired by all who venture there.
