Danish archaeologists have been left baffled by a remarkable discovery unearthed in Boeslunde, Denmark: 2,000 tiny gold spirals dating back over 2,900 years. The tightly wound spirals, reminiscent of curled fabric ribbons, were found in a clump, suggesting they were once housed in a fur-lined box that has since decayed.
According to Flemming Kaul: “The sun was one of the most sacred symbols of that time. Gold is the color that symbolizes the sun and has magical powers. It sparkles and shines like the sun, indestructible and immortal. Therefore, gold is highly valued.”
Measuring a mere 1.18 inches in length and hammered flat to a thickness of just 0.1mm, these pure gold artifacts have sparked intrigue among researchers. Speculations abound regarding their purpose and significance, with experts postulating that they might have adorned an elaborate costume, perhaps worn by a priest-king during ritual sun ceremonies.
Kirsten Christensen, an expert at the Vestsjælland Museum participating in the excavation, commented: “Bronze Age people chose this place to offer gold to the gods. This shows that this area has a special place for them.”
Flemming Kaul, a curator with the National Museum of Denmark, highlighted the sacred symbolism of the sun in the Bronze Age, suggesting that the gleaming gold spirals could have symbolized its radiance.
