Toowoomba horse near death from grass clippings, $10k vet bill
A 10-year-old horse named Forest remains fighting for life after eating grass clippings which triggered a life-threatening condition that could still prove fatal.
Forest ended up in hospital after eating grass clippings
A Toowoomba woman’s beloved horse is fighting for his life, while she is looking at a $10,000 vet bill, after eating grass clippings.
Jessica Sophie Boyd has been the proud owner of Forest for 10 years and was shocked when she walked out to her paddock to find her “best friend” laying in pain on the ground.
She said grass clippings had been dumped over the fence which he had eaten causing an impaction, known as leaky gut.
“Horses can’t vomit, and grass cuttings are too dense, when they get hot they cement and when a horse eats that it messes up the flora in their digestive system,” she said.
“He was very sick and he ended up going into the vet clinic, he’s been tubed and pumped with antibiotics and plasma, he’s in a lot of pain and he probably won’t be out until after the weekend if all goes well.”
Jessica Sophie Boyd has owned Forest for a decade.
Ms Boyd praised the Darling Downs Equine Unit for their treatment, but said it was still touch and go if Forest would make it.
“He’s my darling, I’ve had him through thick and thin and it’s so hard seeing him in pain, while he’s still fighting I’ll still fight and until he gives up we won’t give up,” she said.
“They’ve told us he’s teetering on the edge, he’s still not in the clear, because he has had an impaction he hasn’t eaten since this has happened and when they tried to introduce food he rejected it because his intestines are so inflamed.
“He’s still in the hospital and he’s not out of the woods yet, the chances of him still dying are still very real.”

Ms Boyd said the ordeal had been costly not just for Forest but for her financially.
“The plasma alone is a $1000 a bag and he’s had a few bags of that so far,” she said.
“I’m very lucky to have a really supportive partner who is helping me through this bill, it’s really high and not something we expected to pay.
