Chelsea are closing in on their first January signing after reaching an agreement with a £100m-rated South American Star Player

As the January transfer window nears its conclusion, clubs across Europe have intensified their transfer activity. Chelsea are firmly in that mix, with several problem areas still needing attention if they are to seriously challenge for trophies and secure Champions League qualification this season.

To mount a genuine Premier League title push, the Blues are believed to be targeting reinforcements in three key positions: centre-back, goalkeeper, and a reliable goalscorer. Encouragingly for supporters, progress appears to be ongoing in all three departments.

In central defence, Chelsea are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Rennes over a move for Jeremy Jacquet. Should that deal fail to materialise, Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi and Como defender Jacobo Ramon have been identified as alternative options.

Between the posts, Chelsea have recalled Teddy Sharman-Lowe from his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers, while also monitoring Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. Backup keeper Filip Jorgensen is meanwhile understood to be weighing up a potential exit.

The most notable development, however, has emerged in attack. According to Indykaila News, a well-followed account on X, Atlético Madrid could be open to selling Julian Álvarez this summer. The Argentine forward is reportedly keen on a return to the Premier League, with Chelsea already making concrete efforts to secure his services. A fee in the region of £75 million is said to be under discussion.

Since arriving at Atlético from Manchester City in 2024, Álvarez has impressed on an individual level. The 25-year-old has recorded 40 goals and 13 assists in 84 appearances at the Wanda Metropolitano. However, having previously won the Champions League, FA Cup, and two Premier League titles with City, his expectations of continued silverware have not been met in Spain.

Under Diego Simeone, Atlético have struggled to keep pace with Real Madrid and Barcelona, and major honours have so far proved elusive. While earlier reports suggested the club would only consider offers of up to €150 million, this latest update indicates both player and club may now be open to a transfer.

Chelsea’s recent spending in attack has yet to yield consistent results. Despite investing close to £100 million last summer on João Pedro and Liam Delap, neither has fully established themselves as a dependable goal scorer. João Pedro has shown greater promise with 11 goals in 31 appearances, while Delap has managed just three.

If the reports are accurate, Chelsea appear determined to correct course by targeting a proven striker with experience at the highest level. Whether they can ultimately land Álvarez remains uncertain, but the intent to strengthen decisively is clear.
