Onagers, also known as Asiatic wild asses, are the most endangered members of the horse family on Earth. Fewer than 600 remain in the wild, all restricted to just two isolated regions in Iran. Over recent decades, their population has been devastated by poaching, disease, and rapid habitat loss as human development encroaches on their shrinking grassland and desert homes.
