Kansas City Chiefs trade Trent McDuffie to Los Angeles Rams: report
A key piece of the Kansas City Chiefs’ championship-era defense is reported to be headed to the West Coast.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams are working on a blockbuster trade that would send All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a package that includes the 29th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
In addition to this year’s first-round pick, the Chiefs acquired 2026 fifth and sixth-round picks as well, along with a 2027 third-round pick.
The Chiefs now hold two first-round picks in the upcoming draft, picks they’ll need to hit on to get back on track after missing the postseason in 2025-26.
If the deal is finalized, it would mark a significant roster change for the Chiefs. It also frees up at least $90 million in guaranteed money and $13 million of cap space immediately, after the Chiefs are set to save around $20 million in 2026 cap room with the expected release of OT Jawaan Taylor on Wednesday.
McDuffie has been a key part of the team since being drafted in the first round in 2022. He earned All-Pro honors and has been widely viewed as one of the team’s most reliable defensive players during its recent postseason runs.
He is expected to sign a long-term deal with the Rams if the trade is completed, making him a foundational piece of Los Angeles’ defense moving forward, according to Schefter.
Following the news of the trade, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted his reaction to the McDuffie trade on X.
McDuffie was also born and raised in Westminster, California, a neighboring city to Los Angeles in Orange County.
