Baby on the way! Cincinnati Zoo announces giraffe Tessa is pregnant

A giraffe baby is on the way at the Cincinnati Zoo!

The zoo’s announced 19-year-old giraffe Tessa is pregnant with her fifth calf.

It will be Tessa’s fifth calf, due to join the rest of the group including five-year-old father Zeke, Zoey and half-brother Fennessy.

The baby is due sometime in October.

The zoo shared a photo of an ultrasound teasing the announcement earlier this week.

“The keeper team sent us an ultrasound photo, so we decided to have a little fun with our social media followers and let them guess who’s pregnant,” said Cincinnati Zoo’s marketing manager Amy LaBarbara. “We got 1400 guesses on Facebook alone, and very few of those were giraffe!”

The zoo says the pregnancy is encouraging news as they look to double the size of their herd when they open Giraffe Tower in the next couple of years.

The new habitat aims to expand space for the giraffe herd and provide more feeding and behind-the-scenes opportunities.

The zoo says they plan to share updates on Tessa’s pregnancy on its social media pages.
