A bald eagle that crash-landed in an alligator-infested canal was rescued by a deputy and an animal services officer this week.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said a resident in the Stuart West/Cobblestone community in Palm City reported that an eagle had crash-landed in their yard.

When the bird tried to take flight again, it ended up in a nearby canal known to be home to large alligators.

“Without hesitation, MCSO Corporal William Weiss and Animal Services Officer Shannon McGee waded into the water as the eagle struggled and began moving farther out. Together, they were able to safely secure the bird and bring it back to shore, out of immediate danger,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook.

The eagle was taken to a wildlife hospital, where it is recovering from a “significant” wing injury.
