The Los Angeles Dodgers are the two-time defending World Series champions and they look like the best team in baseball by a significant margin in the early part of the season. Much of the reason the Dodgers take a 15-4 record into their Saturday night meeting with the Colorado Rockies in Denver is their four-pack of superstars. The combination of Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith give the Dodgers a distinct advantage.
As dynamic as the latter three members of that foursome are, it’s clear that Ohtani is the best of the group. That appears to be selling him short. He appears to rank with Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron as the best players to ever play, and there is a very good chance he may be the best ever.
In addition to his explosive hitting and remarkable pitching, Ohtani is personable and friendly to his fans. He demonstrated that once again when he signed a baseball for a 100-year-old fan prior to the game against the Rockies.
In the photo above, Ohtani signed a baseball for Momoyo Kelly, who said, “it’s like a dream” as Ohtani signed the ball for her.
Ohtani has not gotten off to a stellar start at the plate, but he is starting to warm up. He is hitting .265 with 5 home runs and 10 RBI in the early part of the season. Freeman is hitting .282 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI, while Betts is off to a very slow start with a .179 average along with 2 home runs and 7 RBI. Smith is hitting .300 with 2 home runs and 10 RBI.
