The Buffalo Bills entered Day 2 of the NFL Draft with a clear goal. Improve the pass rush and bring more pressure to opposing quarterbacks.
But when they selected T.J. Parker at No. 35 overall, the reaction from fans was anything but positive.
Concerns quickly spread across the Buffalo fanbase. Parker’s drop in sack production and a long stretch without getting to the quarterback raised serious questions.
Some fans even labeled him a “flag machine,” reflecting frustration over discipline and impact.
General manager Brandon Beane addressed the criticism head on. He made it clear that the organization’s evaluation goes far beyond sack numbers or highlight plays.
“We’re not just looking at sacks,” Beane said. “We’re looking at how a player affects every snap. Setting the edge, playing physical, doing his job the right way.”
In 2025, Parker recorded just five sacks after posting a much stronger total the year before. He also went through a seven game stretch without a sack, and his pass rush grade sat at 74.5.
Those numbers fueled the backlash from fans expecting a more explosive edge threat.
Inside the building, however, the perspective is different. The Bills believe Parker’s strength lies in his ability to control the edge, stay disciplined, and contribute in ways that do not always show up on the stat sheet.
“There’s more to playing defensive end than just getting sacks,” Beane added. “He’s disruptive in ways people don’t always see.”
The frustration from fans is also tied to a familiar pattern. Buffalo has invested in similar edge profiles in recent years, players known more for size and structure than elite burst. That history has created doubt about whether this pick truly solves the team’s biggest need.
Still, Beane pushed back on that narrative.
“We believe in the player,” he said. “He’s tough, he’s coachable, and he fits what we want to build defensively.”
For the Bills, this selection represents a commitment to identity. Physical, disciplined, and structured defense over flash and hype.
For T.J. Parker, the pressure is immediate. He will have to prove that he is more than the criticism, and more than the label being placed on him.
And for Buffalo fans, the debate is just beginning.
