Bills cornerback Hairston builds ‘armor’ for 2026 season
When Max Hairston was on the field last year, he showed exactly why the Buffalo Bills selected him in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He flashed big-play potential and grabbed two interceptions in his 11 games.
But the word “when” is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Hairston missed time with three separate injuries during his rookie campaign, including an LCL sprain and a late-season ankle injury that kept him out of the playoffs. Heading into year two, the 22-year-old cornerback knows that staying on the field is non-negotiable.
For Hairston, the offseason mission was simple: build a body that can withstand a full 17-game NFL schedule.
“That was my number one priority going into the offseason,” Hairston said. “Just making sure my body is 100% back to feeling great, making sure that I’m putting muscle on — basically to add armor. So I don’t gotta deal with the little knick-knack stuff like that. Just being real intentional and getting healthy, honestly.”
Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard recognizes the raw talent Hairston brings to the secondary, but echoes the need for durability.
“We want to keep healthy for a whole season,” Leonhard noted. “That’s the one thing that’s going to be a big challenge for him, is just continue to grow into that NFL body. Be available every week.”
When Hairston is available, his impact is undeniable. “The ability to take the ball away, right? He flashed that last year,” Leonhard added. “You saw some big play potential. I felt like he was a guy that you have to create some vision for in your defense, however you get to that right.”
The Bills’ front office clearly wants to ensure they have depth and varying skill sets in the secondary. In the 2026 NFL Draft, Buffalo used another premium asset on a cornerback, trading up to take Ohio State’s Davison Igbinosun in the second round (No. 62 overall).
If anyone expected Hairston to be bothered by the team drafting another high-profile corner, they’d be mistaken. Hairston had no issues with the move. In fact, he says he is excited about the pick and ready to get to work alongside the rookie.
With a revamped physique and a team-first mindset, “Mad Max” is aiming to make his second year in Buffalo his most impactful one yet.
