The New England Patriots entered mandatory minicamp hoping to continue evaluating one of the most intriguing defensive backs from their 2026 draft class.
Instead, an unexpected injury has temporarily slowed his development.

According to reports, fifth-round rookie cornerback Karon Prunty missed the first two days of New England’s mandatory minicamp after suffering a left leg injury during offseason activities.
The setback quickly became a talking point as coaches continued assessing the Patriots’ young secondary.
Reporters at practice observed Prunty working alongside members of the training staff while wearing a protective wrap covering his left leg.
The rookie was unable to participate fully as teammates continued preparations for training camp.
Fortunately for New England, early indications suggest the injury is considered a minor setback rather than a significant long-term concern.
The Patriots have not disclosed the exact nature of the injury, nor have they announced a timeline for his return.
Still, any absence during minicamp is far from ideal.
Prunty arrived in Foxborough carrying the reputation of being one of the more experienced cornerbacks in the 2026 draft class.
Across stops at Kansas, North Carolina A&T, and Wake Forest, he started all 55 collegiate games he played while recording 166 tackles, seven interceptions, and 30 pass breakups.
His breakout 2025 season at Wake Forest particularly caught the attention of NFL scouts.
According to Pro Football Focus, Prunty ranked among the ACC’s most effective coverage defenders, allowing opposing receivers to complete just 44.4 percent of passes thrown in his direction.
The Patriots viewed that experience and versatility as valuable traits for a player expected to compete for a long-term role on the boundary.
Head coach Mike Vrabel and his staff have also projected Prunty as an important contributor on special teams during his rookie season.
That development process now faces a temporary interruption.
For late-round rookies, every practice rep matters.
Mandatory minicamp provides a critical opportunity to learn the playbook, build trust with coaches, and establish a place on the depth chart before training camp begins.
Missing time can make that challenge even more difficult.
The Patriots remain optimistic that Prunty’s absence will be brief.
However, until the rookie returns to full participation, his recovery will remain one of the more closely monitored storylines inside Foxborough.
