“Dire Wolf” The largest ancestral canine that ever lived, ten thousand years ago
Dire Wolves are a large monstrous version of a Grey Wolf.
They can grow up to 4x the size of normal wolves, and tend to be more feral and ferocious.
Dire wolves are seen by the people of Naneth as bad omens, and are generally avoided or killedonsight.
– History – In AoR 597, a pack of dire wolves forced a group of adventurers into Death House, trapping them inside and transporting them to Barovia.
It was later discovered by the Saviours of Barovia that these stark white dire wolves were actually servants of Strahd Von Zarovich.
– Description – Dire wolves typically grew to a length of 8ft and a weight of 700lbs – 800lbs.
The largest specimens of dire wolf easily compare to the size of a cow or horse.
A dire wolf’s fur is extremely thick, coloured typically black, grey or white.
Their fur helps them to survive Atmora’s harsh winter conditions.
Because of their large builds, Dire wolves are always considered the apex predator of whatever region they claim as territory.
The most common habitats being the Pinetrost Woods of Atmora and the The Wilderlands of Astora.
– Behavior – Far more ferocious than regulars wolves, the dire wolf will not shy away from any prey, usually catching, torturing and finally eating their targets alive.
Packs of dire wolves usually number around 4-5 members, with a single male commanding the attention of the females.
When spotted alone, a dire wolf is most likely a solitary male, searching for a pack to challenge and dominate.
When engaged in combat, the dire wolf’s greatest weapon is it’s sheer size, giving it a power advantage over most creatures.
They often sported a full mouth of teeth, with two large fangs protruding from the top jaw.
Unlike normal wolves, dire wolves typically did not relay on ambush hunting, instead using their sheer size to overpower most prey.
