Mosha, a juvenile elephant, faced a life-altering tragedy at just seven months old when she lost her front leg to a landmine near the Thailand-Myanmar border. However, thanks to the dedication of Surgeon Therdchai Jivacate and the collaboration with the Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation, Mosha became the recipient of the world’s first prosthetic leg for an elephant.

Encountering Mosha two years after the incident, Dr. Jivacate embarked on a groundbreaking journey to provide the elephant with a series of prosthetic legs, adapting to her growing size and weight. At the age of ten, weighing approximately 4,400 pounds, Mosha recently received her latest prosthetic limb, marking a testament to the ongoing advancements in prosthetic technology.

Dr. Jivacate, a trailblazer in the field, has crafted over 20,000 prosthetic legs for both humans and a diverse array of animals, including dogs, cats, and birds. Founder of the Prostheses Foundation in 1992, he is dedicated to providing free prosthetic limbs to disadvantaged amputees. His acclaim is rooted in pioneering methods that enable the creation of cost-effective, high-quality prosthetics using locally sourced materials.

Crafting a prosthetic leg for an elephant presented a unique challenge for Dr. Jivacate. Motivated by compassion, he was determined to aid Mosha, understanding the potentially incapacitating impact her injury could have on her mobility and overall well-being. He emphasized the risk of serious cartilage damage due to her unbalanced gait, which could ultimately lead to her demise.

IDr. Jivacate meticulously designed Mosha’s initial prosthetic leg using a blend of thermoplastic, steel, and elastomer materials. This innovative design provided Mosha with both comfort and support, enabling her to master walking with her artificial leg within just 12 hours. Given Mosha’s rapid growth, three additional prosthetic legs were necessary within her inaugural year.

Dr. Jivacate and his team persist in their commitment to exploring more advanced materials for crafting optimal prosthetic legs capable of bearing the weight of Mosha and other elephants. Despite the challenges, he expresses gratitude for the opportunity to assist Mosha in reclaiming her ability to walk, noting her acknowledgment of his efforts with a unique trunk salute each time he visits the elephant hospital.
Mosha’s remarkable journey from tragedy to triumph stands as a testament to human ingenuity and compassion. Dr. Therdchai Jivacate’s pioneering work in developing prosthetic legs for elephants not only granted Mosha a second chance at life but also opens doors for advancements in the field of animal prosthetics, showcasing the transformative power of technology and empathy.
