In a heartwarming tale of resilience and compassion, a Weimaraner named Gilbert Grape defied all odds when he was rescued from a high-kill shelter, his life hanging in the balance due to a massive tumor on his underbelly. The incredible story was shared with DogHeirs by Keri Pink, a media relations volunteer with Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue (TPWR).

Upon receiving a distressing report about a Weimaraner on death row, shelter volunteers rushed to the scene only to discover Gilbert Grape struggling to stand with a gigantic grape-shaped tumor on his chest. Despite the unknown duration of his suffering and the lack of medical attention, Gilbert Grape became a symbol of hope for those determined to save him.

Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue immediately intervened, defying the shelter’s standard 72-hour waiting period for strays. Two committed volunteers informed the rescue organization, initiating a race against time to save Gilbert Grape.
Transported to a 24-hour specialty veterinary facility, Gilbert underwent critical diagnostics, stabilization procedures, and surgery. The estimated cost of these life-saving measures reached $7,000, but for the rescue volunteers and veterinary personnel involved, sparing Gilbert’s life was a non-negotiable decision.

“As a coпseqυeпce, we soυght the coυпsel of a variety of veteriпariaпs aпd sυrgeoпs iп order to make the greatest optioп for the dog’s fυtυre.” We created a саmраіɡп aпd commυпicated the issυe to oυr Facebook sυpporters, aпd fυпds begaп to stream iп.”

With public backing and support from a network of veterinarians and surgeons, a fundraising campaign was launched on social media to cover the costs of diagnosis, stabilization, and surgery. The response was overwhelming, as funds poured in to give Gilbert a chance at a new life

“Gilbert’s tale reached a ѕіɡпіfісапt пυmber of people, aпd some adoptioп applicatioпs were most likely approved as a coпseqυeпce.” While he isп’t qυite ready for adoptioп yet, he has a bright fυtυre аһeаd of him.”
Gilbert underwent successful surgery and a rapid recovery in the ICU, emerging from the hospital two days later. A subsequent pathology report revealed that the 12-pound tumor was nothing more than a benign lipoma, marking Gilbert as cancer-free.
Despite his triumph over the tumor, Gilbert faced challenges such as muscle loss and physical strain due to carrying the tumor for an extended period. Veterinary experts prescribed a physical therapy regimen involving manipulations, massages, and water treatments to address these issues.

As Gilbert embarked on his journey to rehabilitation, his story touched the hearts of many, leading to several adoption applications. Although not yet ready for adoption, Gilbert’s bright future is anticipated as he continues to flourish in the care of his foster family.
A year after his rescue, Gilbert found a loving and dedicated family who embraced him despite his hip dysplasia diagnosis. Thriving in their care, Gilbert enjoys regular water treatments in their pool, symbolizing the triumph of love, compassion, and resilience over adversity.
