In a remarkable archaeological discovery, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) has excavated two ghost ships near the coast of Caesarea, revealing a trove of exquisite jewelry and a multitude of ancient coins. The ships, one dating back 1,700 years and the other approximately 600 years, were found in shallow waters, their cargo remarkably preserved despite centuries of exposure to the sea.

The 1,700-Year-Old Ghost Ship:
One of the ghost ships, estimated to be 1,700 years old, is believed to have met its fate while anchored, succumbing to the forces of a powerful storm. Despite the shipwreck scattering its hull across a sizable area, the cargo remains intact in waters approximately four meters deep. The artifacts recovered from this ancient vessel include an octagonal gold ring with a sizable blue-green gemstone intricately engraved with the image of a “good shepherd.” Another ring, adorned with a red gemstone carved in the shape of a lyre, adds to the treasure trove.

The 600-Year-Old Ghost Ship:
The second ghost ship, dating back around 600 years, likely shared a similar fate, sinking while anchored during a storm. Situated in the same shallow waters, the vessel revealed an array of valuable artifacts, including exceptionally well-preserved ancient coins of various dates. Among the discoveries are a bronze statue of an eagle, a representation of a Roman god wearing a mask, numerous bronze bells, ceramic vases, giant bronze nails, and parts of the pump and iron anchor.
