Three years ago, while strolling through a park in her home in Mexico, a woman experienced a tragic event. There, shivering all alone by a chain-link fence, was an abandoned dog. The fact that the poor creature had been left to fend for herself in a world she couldn’t see was an even greater shock.
A closer look revealed that the dog had no eyes.
The woman who found her connected to social media, posting a plea for help on Facebook. From there, Mauricio Perez began to learn about her suffering.
Perez told The Dodo that, despite his persistence, he had to go fetch her. She was extremely skittish. Her trust was shattered.
After that, everything began to change.
Perez lifted the frightened dog in his arms and took her home. Perez said, “My friend helped bathe her, and we took her to the vet.” The vet informed him that she had to sleep with bandaged eyes because something had happened to her, like childbirth or a treated condition. “I think her former parents mistreated her, so it is something we can’t know for certain.”
Although surgery could restore the dog’s vision, Perez was committed to healing her soul.
Perez named the dog Cocha and began the task of earning her trust. “It was a process,” Perez said. “We gave her time to know she was safe, petting her every day until she started letting go of her fear.”
Over time, as Cocha’s shyness diminished, it was replaced by comfort and confidence. The light of love had managed to penetrate the darkness of Cocha’s world.
Initially, Perez put a “halo” device on Cocha to prevent her from bumping into things as she navigated her way home. But soon, she learned to move around the house without it.
Perez claimed that she knows where every door and every piece of furniture is. She knows where her food and water bowls are. “She is very intelligent. I wish she didn’t have eyes.”
Best of all, Cocha always knows where to find affection. Perez claimed that she loves talking to people.
Three years have passed since Cocha was adopted to face the world alone. But now she is practically unrecognizable from her old self, thanks to Perez’s love and care.
“She is very well, happy, and healthy,” Perez said.
Cocha had formed a lasting bond with Perez, just as he did with her.
“Cocha means a lot to me,” Perez said. “She stole our hearts. Indeed, I am very glad we could capture her.”
