A scared, timid dog being put in a wheelbarrow was rescued at the last moment

The very notion of animal euthanasia strikes fear into the hearts of all dog owners, yet tragically, it is a harsh reality for many shelter animals. Texas, according to a report by the Best Friends Network, saw the highest number of shelter animals euthanized for the second consecutive year. With rising intake rates and declining adoption rates, shelters across the state became overwhelmed, leading to the heartbreaking decision to euthanize dogs, particularly those deemed less likely to find homes.

Darla was among the dogs facing this grim fate. A shy Golden Retriever residing at Laredo Animal Care Services, she struggled to adapt to shelter life. When overcrowding forced the shelter’s hand, Darla, along with other less adoptable dogs, found herself on the euthanasia list.

In July 2023, as shelter staff prepared to euthanize Darla, her fear rendered her unable to walk, prompting them to transport her in a wheelbarrow. Fortunately, fate intervened when members of Austin Pets Alive! arrived at the shelter on a rescue mission. Clare Callison, APA!’s director of national operations, was among them, drawn to Darla’s plight as she cowered in the wheelbarrow.

Determined to save her, APA! swiftly intervened, rescuing Darla from the brink of euthanasia. Despite her initial fear, Darla’s rescuers discovered her capacity for love and affection, spurring her journey to a brighter future.

After receiving medical care, Darla found temporary refuge with Mile High Lab Mission in Denver, Colorado, before being welcomed into a loving forever home. Today, she wags her tail with joy, a testament to the transformative power of compassion and second chances.

Darla’s story serves as a reminder of the tireless efforts of organizations like APA! in saving shelter animals and offering them the chance at a new beginning.
