FIFA Unveils AI-Powered Ball for the 2026 World Cup: Clear Signs Messi Will Play the Tournament

FIFA has unveiled the official match ball for the 2026 World Cup — and it’s being hailed as the most advanced football ever created.

The world football governing body announced that the new ball, named Adidas Trionda — meaning “three waves” — is powered by artificial intelligence. It provides real-time feedback to help VAR make faster and more accurate decisions on handballs and offsides.

Priced at £119 / $160, the Trionda was designed to assist both referees and players with embedded smart technology that tracks every touch to improve officiating accuracy.

Its color palette — white, red, blue, and green — honors the host nations of the 2026 World Cup: the United States, Canada, and Mexico, while also evoking memories of the 2014 Brazuca. The design features a blue star for the U.S., a red maple leaf for Canada, and a green eagle for Mexico.

“This is the most visually striking FIFA World Cup ball we’ve ever created,” said Sam Handy, VP of Adidas Football. “A handcrafted masterpiece made for the biggest stage — a ball you want to hold, admire, and above all, play with.”

Inside the Trionda is Adidas’ latest Connected Ball Technology, featuring a sensor that transmits live data to the VAR system. Combined with player position data and AI assistance, it helps referees make faster calls on offsides and handballs by tracking every contact with precision.

In promotional images, stars like Jude Bellingham, Lionel Messi, and Lamine Yamal appear joyfully playing with the ball. One image humorously shows Yamal looking smaller than the ball itself — but don’t worry, that’s just an effect. FIFA’s choice to feature Messi in the campaign strongly suggests he’ll play in the tournament, aiming to defend Argentina’s World Cup title.

Like most World Cup balls, Trionda’s designers promise “optimal flight stability” thanks to its four-panel structure, deep seams, and strategically placed embossing. However, many balls used in recent tournaments — except for the 2014 Brazuca — have faced player criticism for unpredictable flight paths.

“Created for the world’s biggest sporting event,” Adidas stated, “the 2026 Official Match Ball represents the latest evolution in our AI-powered Connected Ball Technology, providing real-time data and insights that shape everything from refereeing decisions to tactical analysis across all 104 matches. It’s the most advanced match ball we’ve ever made.”

And yes — the Trionda even has its own TikTok account (@Trionda), where fans can watch the ball in motion from a first-person perspective.
