A Defenseless Mother Dog, Courageous in Adversity, Clings to Hope Until Rescuers Arrive

Despite the impassioned pleas of various rescue organizations, an alarming trend persists: an increasing number of dogs are left to fend for themselves on the unforgiving streets.

What’s particularly heartbreaking is that many of these innocent creatures have endured previous abuse or have been callously tethered to fences, abandoned without the means to protect themselves from the myriad dangers that lurk.

Such was the plight of Angel—a mother dog discovered tethered to a tree in Iglesia Park, Aliso Viejo, California. This resilient one-and-a-half-year-old Siberian Husky and German Shepherd mix was utterly defenseless, unable to safeguard herself, let alone her seven vulnerable puppies.

Fortunately, rescuers from a nearby center soon located her and sprang into action to ensure her safety and that of her offspring.

Following a successful operation in Aliso Viejo’s park, the rescuers transported the mother dog and her litter to the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center. Regrettably, concrete details about how this canine family came to be in such dire circumstances remained elusive.

Though found in good health, a sobering Facebook post from the City of Mission Viejo, CA – Local Government revealed that they were devoid of food, water, or shelter. This suggests their ordeal had not endured for long before rescuers intervened.

However, the outcome could have been tragically different, as myriad dangers lurked nearby. With coyote mating season underway, the streets harbored numerous threats, yet providentially, the worst did not come to pass.

While the center’s staff endeavored to locate a microchip on Angel’s body, none was found. Thankfully, signs of prior abuse were absent, and both she and her puppies appeared to be thriving.

Praising the courageous mother, Kelly Tokarski, the public information specialist for the City of Mission Viejo, remarked, “Simply put, Angel is a great dog. She just needs a wonderful home to give her the love she deserves.”

Before Angel and her pups embarked on their fresh start, they received baths and vaccines, courtesy of the Dedicated Animal Welfare Group (DAWG), who also provided essential medical supplies.

While the puppies quickly found their forever homes, Angel, despite being a young mother herself, faced a slightly longer wait. Yet, the power of social networks once again proved instrumental in securing her future.

“Just 24 hours after Angel’s story aired on KNBC Channel 4 and went viral via the City’s social media, the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center experienced a surge in adoption applications for this sweet Siberian husky-German shepherd mix,” the City of Mission Viejo, CA – Local Government shared in a subsequent Facebook post.

Ultimately, a loving family from Murrieta, California, embraced Angel into their home, providing solace for their recent losses.
