Brave rescue team jumps into river to rescue a baby elephant in Samburu: A story of courage and hope

Security staff at the Elephant Bedroom camp in Samburu National Reserve successfully rescued a seriously injured and traumatized baby elephant about 6-8 weeks old. The incident took place at 2am on Sunday when the alert trio responded to the baby elephant’s distressed cries. Without fear, they dove into the fast-flowing Ewaso Nyiro River to save its life.

The joint initiative of Save the Elephants and the Kenya Elephant Conservation Service (KWS) played a key role in protecting the baby elephant’s health until the rescue team from the Society’s Reteti Elephant Conservation Community the elephant reached the location. Despite the field investigation team’s efforts to find the baby elephant’s mother, no trace of her has been found. On site, the baby elephant received stable care from KWS wildlife veterinarian Dr. Matthew Muitinda and the Reteti team. The elephant was then transferred to the sanctuary for further care and rehabilitation.

This morning, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary shared an encouraging update on Lomunyak, confirming his robust health. With his wounds carefully stitched, the boy is now healthy and proficient in drinking milk from a bottle.
