Discovered on the brink of death, undernourished and nursing an infected wound, Chhouk’s fate took a turn when a dedicated wildlife worker rescued him. A decade later, Chhouk gracefully strolls on his prosthetic left leg, a testament to the craftsmanship of Cambodian medics who designed it after he lost his limb to a poacher’s snare trap. His caregivers affirm that the prosthetic is not just an aid but a part of him. Chhouk expresses discontent if he cannot wear it, showcasing a remarkable adaptation to his new life.
The journey began in 2007 when Chhouk, less than two years old, was found in a dire state. Wildlife Alliance’s Nick Marx, who first tended to the ailing elephant, recalled the desperate condition he was in. Chhouk’s leg was lost to a poacher’s snare, and the constriction had severed blood flow, leading to the unfortunate demise of the tissue below.
Chhouk’s rehabilitation involved a painstaking process. From being fitted with a prosthetic leg by the Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics to weekly treatments at the Wildlife Alliance, Chhouk’s healing was nothing short of miraculous. Each week, as caretakers undressed his leg, they witnessed the skin regrowing down the leg, covering the entire area.
Chhouk’s resilience is evident in his daily routine. From enjoying a refreshing dip in the pool to strolling through his outdoor enclosure, he has become accustomed to his prosthetic. The meticulous care he receives includes a nightly examination and refitting of the prosthetic, reflecting the commitment to his well-being.
As the first elephant in Cambodia to receive a prosthesis, Chhouk is a symbol of success. His keepers, using reward-based positive reinforcement, have trained him to change his prosthetic willingly. His routine, from being let out in the morning to spending time with another elephant named Lucky, reflects the dedication to his successful rehabilitation.
