The team, led by Officer Ryan McMahon, discerned sounds resembling barking and scratching coming from a container stacked about 25 feet high.
Their timely presence was crucial, considering the terminal housed over 10,000 containers at that moment. Utilizing a crane to lower the container to the ground, they uncovered an unexpected inhabitant.

It turned out to be a tiny, frightened dog that somehow found itself trapped within the confines of the metal enclosure.
“Earlier today, a team of marine inspectors from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston saved a life in an unexpected manner,” U.S. Coast Guard Heartland shared in a Facebook post.

“They heard barking and scratching coming from one of the containers in a stack. When they lowered the container and opened the door, a dog popped out,” the team elaborated.
The canine displayed immense joy and no signs of fear upon finally emerging from the darkness. She eagerly sought refuge in the arms of her rescuers, seemingly expressing gratitude for their heroic intervention.
According to officials, the poor dog had been trapped inside the container with discarded cars for over a week, devoid of food or water. Though the circumstances leading to her confinement remain unclear, the Coast Guard speculates that she may have been inside one of the vehicles.
It was indeed a stroke of luck that she was discovered when she was, as another few days in that condition could have been fatal.

Connie, as she was later dubbed, was swiftly transported to a local animal shelter, from where she was transferred to Forever Changed Animal Rescue.
Despite her initial elation, Connie was severely undernourished, weighing only 30 pounds. Upon arrival at the shelter, she underwent several tests, unfortunately testing positive for heartworm.
“Connie is a bit underweight and currently weighs 30lbs. She is incredibly sweet but very shy and scared of her new surroundings as to be expected. She is heartworm positive and we will be getting her started on treatment ASAP,” FCAR shared on Facebook.
