Lost Treasures of the Sea: Gold and Silver Resurface After Decades in the Depths

A treasure trove of gold and silver, lost to the depths of the ocean for over a century, is set to dazzle the public in California. Valued at over $50 million, the haul includes 3,100 gold coins, 45 gold bars, and more than 80 pounds of gold dust recovered from the wreckage of the S.S. Central America steamship, which sank in 1857 off the coast of South Carolina during a hurricane.

Bob Evaпs, the chief scieпtist oп the origiпal voyage that discovered the shipwreck aпd its treasυre iп 1988, is пow paiпstakiпgly cleaпiпg each piece of gold by haпd, soakiпg it iп a solυtioп aпd brυshiпg off rυst aпd grime that accυmυlated as the treasυre sat 7,000 feet (2,134 meters) below sea level.

The painstaking restoration process is underway, with Chief Scientist Bob Evans leading the effort. Working diligently in a makeshift laboratory south of Los Angeles, Evans meticulously cleans each piece of gold by hand, removing layers of rust and grime accumulated during its 7,000-foot descent to the ocean floor. “This is a whole new season of discovery,” Evans remarked, highlighting the opportunity to peer beneath the centuries-old patina and glimpse the treasure as it appeared in 1857.

The S.S. Central America, laden with riches from the California Gold Rush, met its tragic fate in 1857, claiming the lives of 425 people and contributing to an economic panic. Now, after more than 150 years, the recovered gold offers a glimpse into a bygone era of American history.

Iпvestors пever saw aпy of those proceeds. Iп 2005, they sυed Thompsoп, who theп weпt iпto seclυsioп iп Florida aпd later became a fυgitive after aп Ohio jυdge issυed a warraпt for his arrest iп 2012.

The gold, meticulously restored to its original luster, will be on public display at the Long Beach Convention Center from February 22-24. Each piece is available for sale, with some items fetching prices upwards of $1 million due to their rarity and historical significance.

However, the saga of the S.S. Central America’s treasure is not without controversy. The deep-sea treasure hunter responsible for the initial discovery, Tommy Thompson, remains embroiled in legal battles and is currently incarcerated in Ohio. Despite his efforts in locating the shipwreck and its treasure in 1988, Thompson’s handling of the recovered gold led to protracted legal disputes and his eventual arrest.

Meanwhile, in another remarkable deep-sea discovery, salvage firm Odyssey Marine Exploration has recovered 48 tons of silver from the SS Gairsoppa, a British cargo ship torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1941. Situated three miles beneath the surface, the SS Gairsoppa represents one of the deepest and heaviest recoveries of precious metals from a shipwreck in history.

Workers have unearthed over 1,200 silver bars from the wreckage, valued at approximately £23.7 million ($37 million). Under contract with the British Government, Odyssey Marine Exploration will retain 80% of the haul after expenses, with the remaining 20% allocated to the Treasury.

The SS Gairsoppa’s tragic demise during World War II, and its subsequent discovery and recovery, offer a poignant reminder of the perils and treasures hidden beneath the ocean’s depths. As these lost treasures resurface, they provide a glimpse into history and ignite the imagination with tales of adventure, tragedy, and the enduring allure of sunken riches.
