“Mae Mai’s Journey: From Broken Leg to a Life of Freedom at Elephant Nature Park”

Mae Mai, a 30-year-old elephant, faced a life-threatening situation due to a broken leg sustained during her logging days. Neglected and on the brink of death, Mae Mai’s fortune changed when the compassionate team at Elephant Nature Park intervened. This article chronicles her remarkable journey of recovery, resilience, and the joy of newfound freedom.

Rescue and Arrival at Elephant Nature Park:

Encountering Mae Mai at a nearby elephant camp revealed a heartbreaking tale of illness, injury, and a broken leg. Unable to stand by and watch her suffer, the founders of Elephant Nature Park offered her a lifeline, proposing treatments and a refuge at their park. On January 8, 2021, weakened and unable to step onto a truck, Mae Mai was walked along the riverbank to her new home.

Medical Care and Rehabilitation:

Upon arrival, the dedicated veterinary team, led by Dr. Tom Channarong Srisa-ard, immediately attended to Mae Mai’s critical condition. An x-ray revealed the extent of her injuries, including a cranial dislocation of the distal femur, tearing of the stifle joint capsule, a ships fracture of the proximal tibia, and soft tissue swelling. The comprehensive treatment plan included walking restriction, pool therapy, joint support, pain control, nutritional supplements, wound management, and vitamin supplements.

Mae Mai’s Resilience:

Mae Mai’s swift adjustment to her new environment and her enthusiastic participation in hydrotherapy showcased her resilience. Despite the severity of her injuries, she exhibited a strong will to live. Regular care, a variety of nutritious foods, and supplements led to a noticeable improvement in her weight and overall health.

Friendship with Mae Sri:

After days of observation and introductions to potential companions, Mae Mai found a true friend in Mae Sri, a granny elephant rescued in 2018. Their bond was remarkable, and they enjoyed spending time together under the shade of trees and in the therapeutic pool, reminiscent of their shared connection to the late Dalah.
