Exciting news swept through our Elephant Reintegration Unit in early March, bringing boundless joy to the hearts of our dedicated team. The source of this jubilation was the birth of Neptune, a precious little boy, to Ndara, a former orphan under our care. This heartwarming event marked a significant milestone not only in Ndara’s life but also in the broader context of our Orphan Project, showcasing the triumph of resilience, friendship, and the indomitable spirit of motherhood.
The narrative unfolds on March 4, 2017, when watchmen noticed an unusual gathering near the unit. A cluster of elephants, including newborns Eve, baby Emma, Safi, Eden, and baby Thor, alongside their mothers and orphaned girls from Emily’s herd, had assembled. The cause of this gathering became apparent as the watchmen approached – Ndara had successfully given birth to a baby boy. The newborn, affectionately named Neptune, became an instant source of fascination for the elephant community.

Among the onlookers, Emma, Emily’s second calf, demonstrated a special interest in Neptune. The tiny trunk of the newborn reached out, gently touching Emma, creating a heartwarming connection between the two. This poignant scene resonated deeply with the watchmen and all those involved in the reintegration unit, underscoring the significance of Neptune’s arrival in Ndara’s life as a mother.
Mweya assumed the role of an informal caregiver for Neptune, adding to the impressive count of 25 babies born in our Ex Orphan group, a testament to the success of the Orphan Project. Each of these births symbolizes the efficacy of our efforts in reintegrating orphaned elephants into their natural habitat, fostering a thriving community that mirrors the bonds seen in the wild.
Ndara’s journey into our family dates back to September 2001, when, at just 8 months old, she was rescued near Maungu town, Tsavo East, trapped in a water pipeline manhole. The rescue mission, marked by the dedication of our team, showcased Ndara’s strength and resilience despite the visible injuries sustained during the ordeal.
Ndara’s bond with another rescued elephant, Maungu, deepened over the years, only to face tragedy when Maungu succumbed to a blood clot. Undeterred, Ndara continued to thrive and integrate seamlessly into Emily’s herd at Voi, exemplifying the success of the Orphan Project in providing a second chance at life for elephants like her.

The journey to recovery involved multiple surgeries and months of intensive care, during which the support of the Orphan Project played a pivotal role.
