The Buffalo Bills organization was surrounded by grief this weekend after tragic news emerged involving the family of an established playmaker.
The remains of U.S. Army officer Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., who went missing during military exercises in Morocco, were officially recovered from the Atlantic Ocean following an intense multinational search-and-rescue operation.
For the young Bills star, however, the devastating story was not distant news.

Kendrick Lamont Key Jr. was his older cousin, someone family members describe as both a protector and lifelong role model.
According to relatives close to the family, the playmaker was heartbroken after learning his cousin had been found after days of uncertainty.
The Bills star reportedly remained in close contact with loved ones throughout the search efforts while quietly mourning behind the scenes.
“He wasn’t just family to me. He was the person I looked up to my entire life,” he reportedly shared with relatives.
“We grew up together with a football in our hands almost every day. He taught me toughness, discipline, and how to believe in myself. I’m grateful they brought him home. He’ll always be our hero.”
Friends say Khalil Shakir and Kendrick shared an incredibly close bond growing up.

During holidays and family vacations, Shakir and Kendrick were inseparable, often organizing backyard football games that would last until sunset.
While Shakir chased his dream on the football field, eventually earning his path to the Buffalo Bills, Kendrick chose a life of military service and sacrifice.
Family members described Kendrick as disciplined, humble, and deeply protective of the people around him.
Even while stationed away from home, he reportedly followed Shakir’s football journey closely and celebrated every major milestone in his career.
The tragedy occurred near Morocco’s Cap Draa Training Area after Kendrick and another U.S. soldier reportedly fell into the ocean during an off-duty recreational hike following the African Lion multinational military exercises.
More than 600 personnel from the United States, Morocco, and allied military partners joined the search operation, utilizing helicopters, drones, naval vessels, and specialized rescue teams before Kendrick’s remains were finally recovered.
The second missing soldier has not yet been located, and search operations are still ongoing.
As tributes continue pouring in across both military and football communities, those closest to Shakir say the young Bills star wants the world to remember his cousin not for the tragedy itself, but for the courage and love he carried throughout his life.
For Shakir, every catch moving forward may now carry deeper meaning — a reminder of the older cousin who spent years throwing footballs with him in the yard, encouraging him to dream fearlessly long before NFL stadiums ever knew his name.
