Josh Allen has entered the 2026 NFL season with another major endorsement of his status as one of football’s elite quarterbacks. The Buffalo Bills star was ranked No. 1 among NFL quarterbacks in ESPN’s annual league-wide evaluation, reinforcing the belief that Allen has developed into the complete package at the most important position in the sport.
ESPN’s evaluation was based on input from NFL executives, coaches and scouts, with Allen ultimately taking the top spot ahead of several elite competitors, including Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow. One NFL general manager described Allen as the “most singularly unstoppable player” at the position when he is playing at his best, while also highlighting his improved ball security over the past two seasons.
That recognition is significant because Allen’s evolution has gone far beyond his legendary arm strength.

Arm Strength Still Separates Josh Allen
If there is one physical trait that has defined Allen since he entered the NFL, it is his ability to generate extraordinary velocity.
ESPN has repeatedly recognized Allen as the league’s premier arm talent. In its quarterback trait rankings, Allen was No. 1 in arm strength, ahead of Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson. The evaluation emphasized that elite arm strength is not simply about throwing the ball 60 yards downfield. It is about driving passes into tight windows with enough velocity to beat closing defenders.
That is where Allen becomes particularly dangerous.
He can attack every level of the field and make throws that many quarterbacks simply cannot attempt. Defenses may have excellent coverage, but Allen’s arm gives him the ability to turn seemingly impossible windows into realistic opportunities.
That physical advantage forces opposing defenses to account for the entire field on every down.
His Decision-Making Has Become a Major Strength
Perhaps the most important part of Allen’s development is that he is no longer viewed simply as a quarterback with tremendous physical gifts.
ESPN ranked Allen second in decision-making among NFL quarterbacks in its detailed trait evaluation, behind only Joe Burrow. The ranking highlighted how much Allen improved in this area, particularly when plays break down and quarterbacks are forced to make difficult decisions under pressure.
That evolution matters enormously for Buffalo.
Earlier in his career, Allen could sometimes allow his aggressive mentality to turn into unnecessary risks. But his recent improvement in protecting the football has changed the conversation surrounding him.
The Bills do not need Allen to make a spectacular play on every possession. They need him to recognize when the big play is available, take it when appropriate and avoid turning difficult situations into devastating turnovers.
That balance is one reason his stock remains so high entering another season.
Allen’s Rushing Ability Creates Another Problem
The third major trait that makes Allen so difficult to defend is his ability as a runner.
Unlike traditional pocket passers, Allen can become a legitimate part of the Bills’ rushing attack. His combination of size, strength, speed and physicality makes him especially dangerous around the goal line and in short-yardage situations.
ESPN’s 2026 fantasy quarterback rankings again placed Allen at No. 1, noting that he has remained a major rushing threat throughout his career. He has ranked among the top five quarterbacks in carries and rushing touchdowns in every season of his eight-year career, while continuing to produce elite overall numbers through both passing and rushing.
That dual-threat ability creates a nightmare for defensive coordinators.
A defense can spend an entire drive attempting to contain Allen as a passer, only for him to escape pressure and pick up a first down with his legs. Near the goal line, the problem becomes even more difficult because Buffalo can use Allen as an extra running threat without sacrificing its passing ability.
The No. 1 Ranking Comes With Expectations
Allen’s recognition as the NFL’s top quarterback does not mean the Bills suddenly have everything figured out.
Buffalo is still searching for the franchise’s first Super Bowl appearance since the early 1990s, despite making the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons. Allen’s individual résumé is impressive, including his 2024 MVP award, but the ultimate goal remains a championship.
That is why the 2026 season could carry enormous significance.
Allen is entering his age-30 season with his reputation at an all-time high. The Bills have also made moves to strengthen his supporting cast, including adding wide receiver DJ Moore, while Joe Brady returns as offensive playcaller.
The ingredients are there for another deep postseason run.
For Allen, however, being ranked No. 1 is only the beginning.
His arm strength gives him unmatched physical upside. His improved decision-making has made him more efficient and dependable. His rushing ability allows him to create opportunities when traditional passing plays collapse.
Put those three traits together, and it becomes easy to understand why NFL evaluators continue to place Allen at the top of the quarterback hierarchy.
The Bills now face the challenge that has followed them for years: turning their quarterback’s individual dominance into the ultimate team achievement.
If Allen can continue combining his explosive physical ability with smarter decisions and controlled aggression, Buffalo may have its best opportunity yet to finally break through.
For now, ESPN’s message is unmistakable: Josh Allen is not merely one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. He is the standard others are being measured against.
