Former Patriots QB Draft Bust Announces Retirement at 34, Ending 12-Year NFL Journey

A familiar name from the New England Patriots era has officially reached the end of his NFL journey after more than a decade in the league.
Once viewed as the potential successor to a dynasty quarterback, his career ultimately took a different path filled with flashes of promise and untapped expectations.
At 34 years old, Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly preparing to retire, bringing an end to a 12-year career that included multiple playoff runs, a Super Bowl appearance, and significant financial success.
His NFL journey began in 2014 when the Patriots selected him in the second round with the 62nd overall pick, immediately placing him in one of the league’s most competitive environments.
During his time in New England from 2014 to 2017, Garoppolo primarily served as the backup to Tom Brady, learning within a championship system while waiting for his opportunity.
Despite limited playing time, he contributed to the team’s success and earned two Super Bowl rings, capturing titles in Super Bowl XLIX and LI.
Statistically, his Patriots tenure was efficient in small samples, completing 63 of 94 passes for 690 yards and five touchdowns across 17 appearances.
His most notable stretch came in 2016, when he started two games during Brady’s suspension and led the team to victories, showcasing his potential as a future starter.
However, with Brady continuing to dominate well into his late thirties, New England made a decisive move.
On October 31, 2017, the Patriots traded Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a second-round pick, effectively ending his chapter in Foxborough.
While he found early success in San Francisco and even reached a Super Bowl, injuries became a defining theme of his career, limiting his long-term impact.
Subsequent stops, including time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Rams, saw him transition into more of a backup role as younger quarterbacks took over.
Over 12 seasons, Garoppolo built a respectable résumé, including a winning record as a starter and over $150 million in career earnings.
Yet for many, the narrative will always circle back to what could have been.
A quarterback once seen as the heir to Tom Brady.
A career shaped by opportunity, but ultimately defined by circumstance.
