Beloved SD Zoo Safari Park platypus dies at 21
Eve, the 21-year-old platypus at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, has died, the park announced on social media Thursday.
Eve had been receiving ongoing care for pneumonia, the post said.

The beloved platypus, along with male platypus Birrarung, arrived at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in October 2019, marking the first time in more than 50 years that platypuses have been cared for outside of Australia, which is where they are endemic.
A new facility was built at the Safari Park to welcome the pair.
Both platypuses were born at Taronga Zoo in New South Wales, Australia, in 2004. Birrarung was named after a river in Australia and Eve was named after Evelyn, one of her care specialists in Australia.
“Platypuses are known to live up to 20 years, and at the advanced age of 21, Eve lived a long and extraordinary life,” the Safari Park’s post said.
The unique mammals with their duck-like bills, webbed feet and waterproof fur are facing localized extinction.
Factors like climate change and habitat destruction are threatening the survival of the species, placing it on the “Near Threatened” list.
Throughout her life, the Safari Park said Eve provided insight that helped protect the species in their natural habitat.
“The ripples Eve leaves behind are far-reaching,” The Safari Park said in its post. “We are grateful for every moment with this truly special platypus and invite you to celebrate her incredible life and legacy with us.”
