Lewandowski Misses Penalty as Barcelona Suffer Their Heaviest Defeat of the Season

Barcelona endured a humiliating 1–4 defeat against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on October 5, in Matchday 8 of La Liga. Lewandowski became the villain of the night after missing a crucial penalty in the 76th minute.

The absence of the world’s most expensive young star, Lamine Yamal, left Barcelona’s attack toothless, leading to their worst loss of the season so far.

Just three minutes into the game, Sevilla nearly opened the scoring when Alexis Sanchez found space inside the box, but defender Gerard Martin cleared the ball just in time.

Seven minutes later, Araujo brought down Isaac Romero in the box. After a VAR review, referee Alejandro Muniz awarded Sevilla a penalty. From the spot, Sanchez easily sent goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way to put Sevilla ahead 1–0.

After conceding, Barca tried to push forward, but their attacks lacked creativity, while their defense was alarmingly fragile, allowing Sevilla’s forwards multiple clear chances and forcing Szczesny into constant action.

In the 36th minute, Romero doubled Sevilla’s lead with a close-range finish after a perfect cutback from Vargas.

Deep into first-half stoppage time (45+7’), Rashford pulled one back for Barca with a stunning volley from Pedri’s assist, making it 1–2 before halftime.

In the second half, Barcelona increased the pressure and created several dangerous chances but failed to convert any of them.

The turning point came in the 76th minute when Barca were awarded a penalty after Januzaj fouled Balde in the box. However, Lewandowski shockingly sent the ball wide from the spot, missing the golden chance to equalize.

As Barca’s attacks fizzled out, their defense collapsed completely in the dying minutes.

In the 90th minute, Carmona led a swift counterattack and fired a precise shot past Szczesny to make it 3–1. Then, in the 90+6 minute, Akor Adams tapped in from close range after Ejuke’s low cross, sealing Sevilla’s emphatic 4–1 victory.

This was Barcelona’s first defeat in La Liga this season, costing them the chance to overtake archrivals Real Madrid at the top of the table.

After eight rounds, Barca sit second with 19 points, two points behind Real Madrid.
