A routine renovation project in a small English village unearthed a treasure trove of ancient riches, including coins, jewelry, and artifacts, now valued at a staggering 1.25 million pounds.
The Hawkson treasure, named after the village of Suffolk where it was found, was stumbled upon in November 1992 by Eric Rouse, who was renovating his home with the help of neighbors.
While searching for a lost nail hammer, Rouse’s metal detector led him to a surprising find buried beneath his yard.
What began as a search for a misplaced tool turned into the discovery of a lifetime as Rouse unearthed ancient Roman coins, silver spoons, and precious jewelry.
The excavation, which yielded over 14,000 silver coins, 565 gold coins, and numerous artifacts, shed light on a buried cache dating back to the early fifth century AD. Experts speculate the treasure may have belonged to an ancient Englishman who traded with the Merovingian dynasty in France.
Previously, a treasure dating back 1,400 years was also found in Norfolk (UK) through metal detecting by an anonymous man.
Under British law, unclaimed treasures become state property, though finders may receive substantial rewards. This incredible discovery serves as a reminder of the mysteries buried beneath our feet and the untold stories of ancient civilizations yet to be unearthed.
