The Chiefs Are Trading For QB Justin Fields

According to multiple reports, the Chiefs are trading for New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields on Monday morning. Fields will head to Kansas City to serve as a backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes, who is continuing to recover from a torn ACL injury. Fields served as a starting quarterback for New York for part of the 2025 season.
The Jets, however, are choosing to move on in 2026. The Jets traded for Geno Smith earlier this offseason. Smith is expected to take over as the starting quarterback this fall.
ESPN’s top NFL insider, Adam Schefter, shared the breaking news on Monday morning, just after 11 a.m. E.T.
“Trade: the New York Jets are finalizing a deal that will send QB Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, pending a physical, per ESPN sources. Other teams were interested, but Fields’ preference was to go to Kansas City,” he reported.
“Comp update: Chiefs are expected to send a 2027 6th-round pick to the Jets in exchange for Justin Fields.”\
Mahomes will have a new backup in 2026
Mahomes will have a new backup in 2026, as he continues to recover from his torn ACL injury.
Andy Reid has been encouraged by Mahomes’ recovery.
“He’s around here all the time… 7 hours a day. He’s in there making progress every day,” Reid said, via Chiefs Wire’s Charles Goldman. “Julie (Frymyer) makes sure he stays on task and challenges him… It’s not going to be a pleasant thing every day; you’ve got to fight through and attack the challenge of the rehab and workout.”
