There’s little doubt that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones holds ultimate influence over the team’s signings and hirings. One could say he’s downright authoritarian.

After another season which ended without a playoff appearance, the Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus – choosing to keep first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer at the helm.

The choice to fire Eberflus came as the Cowboys defense finished the regular season as one of the league’s worst – finishing dead bottom in pass defense and scoring defense.

During a Wednesday press conference, Jones was asked about how much say Schottenheimer may have in the new hire.

In response, Jones made a bizarre reference to the Trump Administration’s recent operation in South America that led to the capture of an authoritarian dictator.

‘Trump just said it. I’m running Venezuela. Seriously,’ Jones said while the press room laughed.

‘No way in the world if [Jerry’s son and team CEO Stephen Jones] didn’t want him here. But I particularly had a party when we got him to have him come in, and I was excited about having the uniqueness of his staff.’

Unfortunately for the Cowboys and their fans, the Eberflus defense did not yield positive results.

Dallas was the only team to give up over 250 yards of passing on average.

They also stood alone as the only team to surrender an average of 30 points per game.

Now, the Cowboys will look to a new season where they own two first round draft picks: their own, at 12th overall, and the Green Bay Packers’ selection that could be as high as 19th.
