For days, this poor baby elephant was seen roaming near a village stream, along the forest border. Villagers noticed something was terribly wrong. He tried to eat like any other calf, gently grabbing grass with his trunk, but when he brought it to his mouth, the food slipped and fell. He couldn’t chew. He couldn’t close his mouth. When people looked closer, their hearts sank. His mouth was badly injured and swollen, and even his tongue was wounded.

Moved by this heartbreaking sight, villagers immediately informed wildlife authorities. A dedicated team of wildlife officers rushed to the location with medicines and equipment. Even though he was just a baby, he was still a wild elephant in severe pain, so sedation was necessary to ensure both his safety and the safety of the rescuers.

The veterinarian carefully examined the mouth and confirmed the cruel cause: a jaw exploding trap, also known as a mouth bomb. These deadly traps are made by hiding explosives inside pumpkins, watermelons, or fodder balls. When an animal bites it, the explosion destroys the mouth. Though often set for bushmeat hunting, innocent animals like elephants become tragic victims.
The team immediately began treatment. Necrotic tissue was carefully removed to prevent the spread of infection. The wound was thoroughly cleaned with disinfectants, and healing medicines like metronidazole gel and povidone iodine were applied. Stopping infection was critical, as untreated infections can spread to internal organs and even paralyze the elephant. Powerful antibiotics were administered intramuscularly to fight infection from within, while multivitamins strengthened his immunity and painkillers eased his suffering.

Every possible step was taken to save this young life. Since he could not yet survive alone in the wild, the officers made the compassionate decision to transfer him to an elephant rehabilitation centre, where he can receive continuous care, treatment, and hope for a second chance at life.

This is not just a rescue story. It is a reminder of the silent suffering caused by human cruelty, and the power of kindness when people choose to protect wildlife. Please share his story. His life matters.
