At 18 years old, Simba passed away peacefully at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa, surrounded by the people and the lion who loved him most. Rescued more than a decade ago from a circus in Ayacucho, Peru, Simba spent his early years confined to a cage, deprived of freedom, comfort, and dignity. Like so many animals forced into entertainment, his body paid the price long after the chains were removed.

In his later years, Simba suffered from severe arthritis and chronic pain. For over a year, he was on palliative care, with veterinarians carefully adjusting his pain relief and caregivers modifying his environment to keep him comfortable — including raised feeding platforms to ease the strain on his aging body. Despite his condition, Simba continued to explore his habitat, bask in the sun, and take part in the daily roaring rituals that brought him joy.

But Simba was never alone.

His lifelong bond with his brother ReyA was the heart of his story. From a small circus cage in Peru to the open spaces of the sanctuary, the two lions shared everything. Their emotional reunions after medical separations became unforgettable moments for caregivers — Simba joyfully circling ReyA, even on crooked, arthritic legs, simply grateful to be together again.

In Simba’s final hours, ReyA remained close. When veterinarians determined that Simba’s kidneys were failing and further treatment would only cause suffering, the decision was made to let him go with dignity. Simba passed gently, his carers holding his paws, his brother lying nearby. As Simba slipped away, ReyA roared — a final farewell between brothers.

Simba lived more than half his life free from cruelty. He knew grass beneath his paws, sunshine on his face, and love until the very end. His life stands as a reminder: animals are not performers or possessions — they are individuals who feel pain, joy, grief, and love.
